I attended this school and I wish I could have stayed at it, but I had to move for work to Florida. If you want real authentic Karate, this is where you go. The training is excellent. Now I know what you are thinking, why should I trust this review? Well, I grew up around the world and I used to train karate with the Olympic team in Pakistan. Having seen so many different schools way of practicing karate I can authentically say that the Oyama Karate style is the best for self defense, discipline, and for participating in realistic tournaments. This is the karate that will make you a human weapon. You just have to show up and train hard. All my respects to the Grand Master and his amazing senseis.

World Oyama is an excellent dojo to learn karate. It is a privilege for me and my kids to train at honbu and learn from Saiko Shihan Y. Oyama and Shihan Dai Karl Julian - as well as Senpai Josh and other senpais and kohais. If you are or have been interested in learning, I highly recommend World Oyama in Homewood. Start by signing up for a trial class (adults or kids). I also recommend reading Saiko Shihan Y. Oyama's autobiography, "Chasing the American Dream."

My school used to fight full contact at major tournaments, often facing a few Oyama students in later rounds for first and second place in weight division. I live in Birmingham now, so I may have to stop by the dojo and see if any old guys recognize me, if they're still around.

I trained in the dojo back in the 80's. I remember Shihan Miura, Saiko Shihan S. Oyama and my Shihan Y. Oyama now Saiko Shihan. I am almost 60 and continue to practice to this day. I remember Senpai Shoji. I loved training here. Saiko Shihan knew how to read his students and train us to our strengths while developing our lives in all characteristics. This is great life long training for all ages. You develope confidence, focus, work ethic and faith in one's self. I am loyal to this dojo to this day.
