I’ve been training jiu-jitsu for a long time, and I’ve trained at some of the top schools in LA. Recently crossing paths with John Evans and joining Breakdown Academy has been the best decision I have ever made. The level of instruction is truly world class, so much attention to detail, as well as so many incredible training partners. But beyond that, the vibe and the culture of the academy is what truly sets it apart. It’s hard to put into words, but I promise if you come by and train with us, you’ll know exactly what I mean! From beginners, to advanced practitioners, to kids of all ages, this is definitely the place to be.

I've known John Evans for many years and have trained with and been taught by some of the best Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioners in the world. I would put John's knowledge and teaching abilities up with any of them- he truly cares for his students and his passion shines through in every class. It's a privilege to train in a welcoming environment with someone as knowledgeable as John and I would wholeheartedly recommend Breakdown to people of all skills and sizes.

I've been to many martial arts schools in multiple cities and this place has everything. 1. Class structure. Each class you learn a takedown, a defense, and offense. You get to learn every aspect of the game in one class. 2. The people. I often stick around after class for a while just chilling with folks, but also asking questions. Everyone is so nice and welcoming! 3. SAFETY. The instructors here really care about safety. They go over dangerous moves, when to be cautious, and how to avoid injury/protect yourself. 4. Amenities. You get access to a full gym too! Definitely come by for a free trial to see what I mean!

Since joining Breakdown, I've noticed my confidence and technical skill improve with each class. John teaches in a way that provides a step-by-step process for implementing new techniques (safely) along with practical examples of past jiu jitsu practitioners who have used those techniques on the highest level. As an added bonus, the community at Breakdown is supportive, diverse, and amazingly inclusive. I highly recommend Breakdown to anyone looking to take their game to the next level.

As a brown belt who’s trained full-time at half a dozen jiu-jitsu gyms and dropped in to roll at a dozen more, I’m happy to attest that Breakdown Academy is a true unicorn. John Evans, the head instructor, is that rare combination of masterful practitioner, meticulous teacher, and genuinely wonderful person. As a result, he naturally attracts the kind of people you want to train alongside. From his students to the other coaches, the community he’s built mirrors his welcoming spirit and passion for learning the game. The new location is also top notch: clean, spacious, and connected to an old-school strength-and-conditioning gym you can use for free (shower included). In addition, the schedule is extremely well rounded, with multiple sessions at various hours, alternating gi and no gi days, and an open mat on Sunday afternoons. Whether you’re looking for a safe place to try out grappling or already a veteran on the mats, do yourself a favor and stop by for a visit. You’ll be glad you did.
