About

LA Tenri Judo Dojo offers traditional judo instruction with a focus on quality, extended training sessions that typically last one hour and thirty minutes, longer than many other local clubs. The dojo features a team of experienced instructors including Tokuzo Takahashi, Katsuhiro Ozaki, Stefan Keslacy, Chisei Nakabayashi, and Chikai Nakabayashi, all holding black belt ranks from 2nd to 6th degree. While primarily a judo gym, it also attracts MMA and BJJ practitioners seeking to improve their throws and takedowns, with many noting it's particularly valuable for those looking to strengthen their stand-up game.

reviewsWhat Members Say

Members consistently praise the high-quality traditional judo instruction and extended training sessions that provide thorough workouts. Many describe the instructors as legitimate masters who create a welcoming environment with helpful, knowledgeable students, though some note the dojo may be better suited for those with existing judo experience rather than complete beginners. Several reviewers specifically mention how valuable the training is for BJJ practitioners looking to improve throws and takedowns, with one noting access to the American Judo System video library as an additional benefit. However, one reviewer reported significant difficulties with the enrollment process after four attempts, expressing frustration with what felt like a discriminatory experience.

I brought my son to training in Tenri Judo. Such training must be in every judo club! The training lasted one hour and thirty minutes. That's how long a quality workout should last 💪🏼👍🏼. Most trainings in LA limit workouts to one hour. And we know that's not enough. But unfortunately, the quality of training in many clubs is lacking. In Tenri Judo they teach traditional Judo as it should be. I admire the Senseis of this place. As it seemed to me, this dojo is not for beginners. You need to have at least basic judo skills. I brought my son few days before the competition to gain some experience. We spent an hour on the way in traffic, because we live far from this place. Well, it's worth it ❤️ Thank you Senseis 🙏

This is an excellent training environment for those new and experienced in judo. The instructors are thorough in their workout lineup and they help everybody who has a question. I visited here prior to the USA National competition and was welcomed with warm smiles and positive attitudes. When I come back to the area, I will be back again to train with this crew.

This place is hands down the best place for BJJ practitioner to get better at throws and takedowns in Los Angeles. Don’t bother with other place for Judo b/c the majority of them don’t teach adults or their class slots are limited. Now it is true that they don’t really teach much unless you attend the fundamental class. But at one point in your BJJ/ Judo journey. You have to take responsibility in being objective in what you are weak in. BJJ is traditionally weak at stand up and the Sensei at Tenri through training will help you out in that area. Plus, even though they don’t teach during the regular class for adults. When you get your USA Judo membership, you automatically gain access to the American Judo System video library that Jimmy Pedro and Travis Steven’s created. The American Judo System video plus studying John Danaher Feet to Floor Series has accelerated my Judo training. I know that most BJJ practitioner fear being thrown which I get and Tenri has a reputation of not being beginner friendly but you can make your sessions at Tenri as hard as you want it to be. I promise you’ll be a better BJJ athlete coming training three days a week versus training one week before a tournament working standup at a BJJ school. Even if you don’t like stand up and you’re primarily a guard player. You’ll know the ins and out of stand up and pull to guard on you terms with you being the dictator of where the fight goes. As long you put in the mat time, you will reap the rewards of becoming a complete grappler.

Parents, don’t waste your time and nerves. Today was our fourth attempt— yes, the fourth one! What a nightmare. They still didn’t accept us. I’ve never had to go through such a process even when applying for a serious job! It really felt like some kind of discrimination — maybe national or something else, I don’t know. But the result is the same: we were not accepted after four attempts. So please, don’t waste your time, and energy. There are many judo clubs in Los Angeles that welcome everyone without any discrimination.
