Chapel Hill's dojo is the epitome of SKA values. I've practiced elsewhere for a couple of years and had the pleasure of spending time with this group people. I was challenged in my practice and learned so much with them. They keep the spirit of martial arts sincere and non-profit! The instructors do this out of love for karate not because someone's paying them. Take a look at this dojo. If you've ever wanted to practice karate you will find this to be a wonderful place to do so🥰

As a former instructor at San Jose Shotokan, I have to say that this dojo, as well as the broader SKA organization, is top notch for traditional martial arts instruction. As a non-profit, it is more concerned with perfecting simple but effective techniques, rather than flashy moves. Such skills originated in Okinawa when it was subjugated by feudal Japan. Openhanded self-defense against a samurai determined what techniques were most effective. Likewise, at that time Karate practice was forbidden and it was taught in secret. This history influences the current Shotokan Karate of America (SKA) culture. We follow a traditional passage of the art from teacher to student without adding any personal biases. It is analogous to a pure bread dog. If you are interested in improving yourself, your sense of confidence, by challenging yourself to new limits, then SKA is the organization for you. Kevin Floyd

Maryknoll Shotokan Karate is truly a legendary dojo. Its list of blackbelts reads like a who's-who of Shotokan Karate of America, and US karate in general, for the past sixty years. So many great instructors, fighters, and leaders of other dojos have passed through Maryknoll, and many still train there. I have had the privilege of training at Maryknoll numerous times, and have always found the instruction and atmosphere to be second-to-none. In particular, the Saturday-morning kumite clinics have helped me improve my fighting abilities immensely, providing drills and pointers from seniors who themselves are highly-recognized fighters, while getting to face the disciplined and talented members of the dojo. From white belts to black, from beginners onward, there is a palpable, old-school karate energy that permeates this place. The dojo members are like a family, holding each other accountable and growing together. It's a special feeling to take the floor with them. If you're in LA and interested in trying karate for the first time, or an experienced practitioner looking for a new home, you owe it to yourself to check out this dojo.

I joined Maryknoll Shotokan Karate Club three months ago, and it has quickly become a significant part of my life. From the very first class, I was impressed by the dedication and expertise of the instructors. They put immense effort into teaching in the most effective and disciplined way, ensuring that every student improves and understands the deeper principles of karate. The atmosphere in every practice is something truly special—focused, serious, and deeply respectful. It’s not just about learning techniques; it’s about developing a strong mindset, discipline, and pushing yourself beyond limits. Training here has influenced the way I approach everything in my daily life, and I feel privileged to be guided by such exceptional instructors. If you're interested in seeing what our training is like, visitors are welcome to watch our sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM. Whether you're a beginner or have prior experience, this club provides an incredible environment to grow both physically and mentally. I highly recommend Maryknoll Shotokan Karate Club to anyone looking to train seriously in a supportive and disciplined setting!
