San Diego Shotokan Karate has been a fantastic place to learn traditional karate, while also focusing on discipline and personal growth. The instructor is welcoming to new students and very supportive of everyone’s progress. His enthusiasm for karate is contagious which makes me want to improve. For new students the instructor is happy to have someone either watch a class, or just join a class to try it out. Whether you are new to karate or have previous experience, come and check it out!

I 100% recommend the Shotokan Karate classes in Encinitas. Darren is a professional and an expert in Karate with many years of experience. My daughters are teenagers and they love participating — they’ve learned different katas, and Darren is always finding ways to make the classes enjoyable for them. It’s a varied group of belts so they can learn from them too.

I joined Encinitas Dojo 2 years ago and I couldn't be happier with that decision. It's an outstanding karate dojo that truly honors the traditional values of Shotokan. The SKA organization maintains a direct lineage to Gichin Funakoshi, preserving the authenticity of the art while creating a supportive and respectful environment for all levels. A rare gem for anyone seeking true martial arts spirit. Wether you are willing to "give it a try" or are already experienced in martial arts, you are welcome !

I have trained with the members of San Diego Shotokan Karate for nearly ten years now, visiting their dojo, attending special trainings with them, and practicing with them at the famous San Diego Beach Practice. Darren (the instructor) is very knowledgeable, with a great teaching style, and insightful feedback. He has spotted and helped me fix numerous issues with my techniques and katas over the years, always providing his advice in a direct but kind and constructive manner that makes it easy to apply. The rest of the blackbelts in the dojo are all strong karateka, and the group has great camaraderie, creating a very supportive and encouraging environment. If you are looking for a karate dojo in North County, go check them out!
