SF Shotokan Karate is a fantastic dojo that offers top quality instruction to its students at an exceptional value. In addition to training at one of the SF locations, there is a myriad of opportunities to train with sister dojos throughout not only the Bay Area, but worldwide. Whether you are looking to start your journey or want to dust off the gi and get back into karate I would recommend this establishment. Having been affiliated with this dojo since 2010 I can say with confidence that if you are seeking traditional martial arts experience, value non-profit organizations and would like to train with great folks from all walks of life then this is the place!

I’ve started at this dojo in 2022, and I have learned so much and met a great community of people, in the dojo and in the greater SKA organization. They’re very welcoming and supportive, and I’ve gained confidence and some valuable self defense knowledge!

I have the good fortune to practice with the seniors there over the years. If you are looking for traditional Japanese karate this is the place for you. The instructors have lots of experience and are approachable. So, whether you have never trained, or you have been training for years, you will be glad you came to this dojo. When you go by to check them out plan on joining class as well. Wear some comfortable clothes and give it a try.

This is an excellent group of people who know how to practice and follow the long lineage of Shotokan karate from Japan. The practice consists of basics/kihon, forms/kata, and controlled sparing/kumite. The organization also connects you with dojos around the US and the world, who all practice in a similar manner. It provides a great mix of mindfulness, exercise and assertiveness.

I have trained with members of the San Francisco Shotokan Karate for a decade now, being lucky enough to have been instructed at various practices and special trainings by former dojo leader, Jane, and being a member of the US team with current dojo leader, Mike. This dojo always shows up, from white belts to black belts, with enthusiasm and a great camaraderie. They truly seem like a family. If you're looking for a welcoming dojo where you can learn authentic Japanese karate from highly qualified instructors, stop by and check out a class here.
