My son attends this academy and he loves it. His confidence levels in himself have increased significantly since starting. He also has learned not just the art of Jiu Jitsu and self-defense, but he has gained a deeper sense of self-discipline. The master teacher, Jim, is such an asset not only to my son, but to the entire community of Lakewood.

Lakewood jiu-jitsu academy is an excellent martial arts studio. This studio has conveniently relocated (as of March 2025) on Alameda across from the Denver Federal Center Gate 7 (the south gate, next to the post office). The new studio is more spacious and is being furnished with more amenities. I'm fond of Lakewood Jiu Jitsu Academy's focus on self-defense (as opposed to primarily sport jiu jitsu) and commitment to the Gracie system of jiu-jitsu. Jim Medley has a great depth of experience and focused teaching style that meets each student at their level. I highly recommend this studio for anyone looking to get started in jiu-jitsu or who wants to refine their technique. Also, check out the new Samurai Smoothie bar coming in May!

Excellent experience! I started training in jiu-jitsu as a 40-yr-old woman with no martial arts history, & this is one of the healthiest things I’ve done for myself - psychologically & physically. Training in jiu-jitsu is the perfect way to gain confidence, become empowered, increase stamina, & build strength & flexibility - all while having fun. I wish I’d started 30 yrs ago. Gracie Combatives classes have a clear-cut structure. This is a straightforward & helpful way to learn, as I always check the calendar to know what lesson we’ll cover each day. I appreciate that a membership at this gym includes access to the highly detailed instructional videos taught by the Gracies, which are great to watch before class to prepare oneself, & are a perfect companion to Coach Jim’s awesome classes. I recommend Gracie Combatives classes as a starting place for most adults, even if you don’t feel qualified yet. The facilities here are always clean. Jim is calm, professional, respectful, non-judgmental, highly skilled, & patient with my many questions. He & my classmates always make me feel welcome, capable, & supported. I appreciate that Jim emphasizes self-defense & awareness (both in one’s mind & body), instead of just preparing us for competition/sport. Highly recommended!
