Pat Caputo's American Karate Studio

My daughter has been going to this studio for a little under a year and her confidence has skyrocketed. She’s shy by nature, but this studio really helped her come out of her shell and she is thriving!!! Mr. Josh is incredible at what he does and ensures that every student feels involved. The studio is extremely clean and well maintained as well, which was one of my main concerns when I was looking for karate classes for my daughter.

We were so lucky to have the experience of attending a birthday party at AKS and then, as a result, getting to attend a few classes! Honestly, I was blown away by how much my son loved it as well as the discipline and respect and form taught – in addition to the obvious physicality! We had never been a martial arts family, which I feel now is a shame. I witnessed kids with confidence and pride as well as them gaining real skills in the martial arts form. The teacher, Mr. Josh, is amazing with all these kids, and the owner, Mr. Caputo, is just about the most thoughtful, knowledgeable, and kindest man. I am now lamenting that my son has a full dance card with other school/community activities this fall, otherwise we’d sign up now:) But hopefully this winter! Grateful for the experience he had there, and only wish we tried martial arts generally and here specifically from when he was younger:)

Nothing but positive things to say about AKS! The instructors are great- class is a perfect mix of guiding the students to be focused and show improvement, while keeping a positive, structured environment that still allows flexibility for the different needs that may arise during class. One of the things that has stood out to me most is how the instructors, especially Mr. Josh who teaches most of the classes, never shame the children when they need extra support or redirection. Redirection is handled in a very respectful, positive manner. Children of all skill and confidence levels are welcomed and encouraged to show leadership traits (such as leading the class in warm-ups) to the extent that they are comfortable. I have had children in the tots, basic, and phase 1 programs. We plan to continue for a while, and I have recommended the program to several friends/acquaintances.

What a great group! Our child has been coming for 8 years. He grown up at AKS! The instructions are excellent educators and get to know their students like family. We’ve taken advantage of the best and most affordable summer camp in DE here too. This team is top notch!
