Best MMA school in the state of Virginia. I moved to Richmond this year and one of the first things I did was join MMAI. Both me and my son train there and we have trained at various schools in virginia. I competed in MMA years back and I must say this is the best school I have ever trained at. The coaches are well experienced and very professional. I am glad my teenage son will have the experience of training at MMA Institute.

My daughter loves classes here. The instructors are knowledgeable, patient, and she feels very comfortable around them. I watch every class she goes to, she’s been going for about 6 months at this point and I’ve only seen great instructors, motivated staff and inspiring adult classes. The athletes I see training here are truly nothing short of impressive. My younger daughter already can’t wait to be old enough to start taking classes here. Highly recommend.

I’ve been going here for 2 years now. I walked in with 0 experience, didn’t know anyone, and was a little scared. 2 years in and I’ve never had more self confidence, I’m in the best shape of my life, and I feel like I have a family structure that I’ve never really had before. I would give this gym 1 million stars if I could and I could never ever thank Coach Luke and Coach James and ALL my teammates enough for getting me to this point in my life. 1-0 Sunday.

I trained at MMA Institute for approximately six months before relocating from Virginia. During my time there, I primarily focused on Gi and No-Gi grappling, and this review will be centered on my experience in those areas. It is intended for individuals who already have some grappling experience and are considering joining the gym. -Quality of Instruction: This was my first experience at an ecologically-based Jiu-Jitsu school, and I found the approach to be highly effective. Coaches Brian and Nick, who specialize in No-Gi and Gi training respectively, implement task-based lessons that encourage a cognitive and critical-thinking approach to learning. While these lessons might initially seem like “open rolling,” the structured tasks and limitations introduced during training were designed to present challenges, allowing students to problem-solve and adapt in real-time. Personally, I found that these lessons gave me more freedom and creativity during regular open rolling sessions, as I could approach situations with the core concepts I had focused on during the task-based drills. While traditional drilling still holds value, I found that the ecological teaching method significantly enhanced my understanding and skill development. I would love to see the Institute integrate both approaches in the future should I return to Virginia. -Cleanliness: The facility is well-maintained, with Joel and other staff members consistently cleaning the mats after every class. This attention to cleanliness contributes to a safe and hygienic training environment. -Welcoming Atmosphere: The school offers both competitive and recreational classes, making it suitable for individuals at various stages of their grappling journey. The staff, coaches, and students are friendly, approachable, and supportive. On the rare occasion that an individual displayed disruptive behavior, the staff addressed the situation promptly and professionally. While the school’s student base is predominantly male, which is common in the sport, I can confidently say that the environment is respectful and inclusive for all students, regardless of gender. -Facilities: At the time of this review, the gym does not have showers, which is a feature many may desire. However, I understand that the installation of showers is being considered. Despite this, the gym’s low monthly fees—especially when compared to other schools I’ve been to—make this a minor issue in my opinion. -Conclusion: Overall, MMA Institute is a solid school with high-quality instruction and a positive, respectful environment. If I weren’t moving, I would have no hesitation in continuing my training there for years to come.
