About

Treasure Valley School of Karate offers instruction in both karate and MMA, serving students from age three through adults with adaptive classes available for all abilities. The dojo is owned and run by head instructors Jim and Vanesa Perkins, both black belts who bring a patient yet high-standard approach to teaching. Jim Sensei studied under Hanshi Morris Mack, adding depth to the traditional instruction. The facility provides a practical training environment with multiple weekly class options to accommodate various schedules, though parking directly next to the building is limited with alternative parking available across a street with a signaled crosswalk.

Wow! This doesn’t feel like a school, it feels like family!! They have done such an amazing job at teaching karate skills as well as life skills. If you want people who are invested in your family this is the place. We definitely feel like a part of the community. Vanessa and Jim along with the other teachers are patient and kind but hold high standards for each student. They offer several different classes throughout the week so something always works for our schedule. Photos are from a tournament we did with them recently—so not at their current location but they do a great job at involving all skill and age levels!

We met Sensei Vanessa a year ago she has still been an incredible help to our Jr Black belt. Even though our daughter had a really good grasp of the basics. She was able to present details to our daughter in a different perspective that she was able to grasp. Sensei Vanessa is very patient and is able to present material in various different ways. She has quickly became part of our family. Would highly recommend to anyone considering a dojo.

Jim and Vanesa Perkins own and run this wonderful dojo. There are classes for 3 years old and up. There are Adaptive classes for all abilities. Karate is a great physical workout and stress reliever. Parking next to the building is limited and you can park across the street. There is a signaled crosswalk to safely cross.

I would definitely recommend joing TVSK if you're interested in the martial Arts! I've been training there for almost a little two years, and I'm still learning and growing all while having fun. The sensei's are super patient and kind, but make sure you work hard as well, and everyone you train with is amazing as well. You'll always meet someone you'll grow close with! Tournaments, independent and group classes, and tests are all super interesting. I would absolutely say TVSK is great for all ages!

My 9 year old son currently has been practicing at this dojo for 3 months now. I will have to say I am impressed with this dojo. I have taken martial arts myself when I was a child starting at the age of 8 and continuing on till I was 18 and then off and on, so I have been around a few dojo's and taken different styles. Before my son started at this dojo, I went and toured other's to see what would fit him the best. Here what made this dojo stand out from the rest. It has a great balance of discipline and acceptance of were and how a student is doing. It is not so strict that a student doesn't think that they are making progress, but there is a sense of ownership instilled onto the student to do the correct movements. They want students to feel like they have growth but also aren't going to just give out belts if the student is there for a certain amount of time. In fact you have to earn your white belt when you start, many styles you are just given a white belt when you show up. Secondly, I really like the instructors. During the week classes focus on different aspects. One night it might be forms and another night it will be practical applications to what the students have learned. One night when I was there, I can remember the Sensei telling one of the kids to grab her hair to demonstrate a technique. When the student only lightly grabbed her she said, no really grab my hair because this is how in real life someone is going to do it. It reaffirmed that to me that not only does this dojo practice the forms but shows people the real life application in a real way even with younger kids. Other studios I visited either didn't show practical applications or just really let the kids play around without much structure. The last piece I want to say, is that this dojo is not trying to be a big corporate dojo. If feels like they want to stay small and be more like a family. Everyone knows everyone, the actual dojo is small. When you walk in if feels like it is ran by real people, not someone who owns 20 dojos. It isn't going to be completely immaculate, and they don't have a 3 year black belt program like some schools. But what they do have is family, you make friends, you will learn karate, and become a better person in all aspects.
