I’ve been training at Hu Shin Kai for about 5 years, and I can definitely say that it has changed my karate journey in so many ways. The training and environment in the dojo has opened up amazing opportunities, including the chance to actually train in Japan. This dojo has taught me so much, both in karate and in life. Sensei Tony is a great instructor with so much knowledge and understanding in karate. I really enjoy training here and the Hu Shin Kai community is always supportive!

I have been training at Hu Shin Kai for nearly two years and have had a terrific experience from day one. Nakamura-sensei and the other instructors are extremely knowledgeable and highly skilled at teaching students of all ages and levels. Anyone interested in training holistically in traditional Shotokan karate will enjoy the dojo’s welcoming vibe and its diverse, supportive and earnest community. In addition, the north side location, close to both the expressway and the Blue Line, is a plus for me.

I have been taking karate here for almost 3 years. The instructors are all very good, the people at the dojo are welcoming and a pleasure to work with. I am an adult and am having a great experience. It is a good mix between young and older.

My eldest child has been attending this Shotokan karate dojo for about 2 years now and my youngest just began training, and the progress they’ve made has been amazing. The instructors and Sensei Tony are incredibly skilled and patient. I’ve seen my children grow not only in their karate skills but also in confidence and strength. The atmosphere is positive and encouraging. Highly recommend this dojo to anyone!

Hu Shin Kai is Karate at a totally different level. Just about any karate dojo in the city is going to claim that it's the real thing and that it is traditional and what not. Hu Shin Kai does more than just claim. It lives up to the claim at every point. Nakamura sensei is simply unsurpassed at explaining the minutiae of various techniques, how to move every part of your body to realize the necessary precision and power. I've been to many dojo, here in the States and even in Japan and I can say that his teaching style and expertise is absolutely unparalleled. And there is none of that phony Cobra Kai kind of stuff. Nakamura sensei knows how to organize a class so that everyone (kids and adults) learns and enjoys at the same time. That said, he's serious about working hard and putting your focus into the practice. One needs to be committed. Nakamura sensei's karate credentials are serious and he's absolutely devoted to teaching and to cultivating a real community among the adults and students. He also has deep and ongoing connections to karate associations and individuals in Japan and throughout the world that he brings to the dojo in ways that allows students to experience a whole different kind of karate.
