About

Kiku Matsu Dojo offers training in MMA and judo, but its core focus is aikido with a highly experienced instructional team. The dojo serves as both a local school and the headquarters for the Aikido World Alliance, led by Chief Instructor Andrew Sato Shihan (7th dan) and Dojo-cho Laura DeGraff Sensei (6th dan). With instructors ranging from 3rd to 7th dan ranks, the dojo provides structured classes for all ages and skill levels, including specialized children's instruction. Members appreciate the flexible schedule that allows attending up to three one-hour classes weekly, and the clean, well-maintained facility reflects the disciplined yet welcoming environment.

I came to visit for a seminar and I would do it again in a heart beat. The training was excellent and world class. Because of this, I was able to work with people from other states and countries. The community of Kiku Matsu is a delight. They have students of all ages, and levels. Everyone comes together. There is a balance of joy and serious training. We all come to martial arts for a reason, but at the end of the day if you're not enjoying yourself why are you doing it? In general the space is very open and clean. You won't see dust or neglect anywhere in the space. When you visit look for these details. To me, it reflects the mindset of those in charge. It's also unique because while it is its one school it is also the headquarters of their organization. The two are seamlessly joined. The head of the organization, Andrew Sato Shihan is a master teacher. He trains with the humble mindset to always be learning. I truly believe he is there to serve his students the best way he can -- a gift that is very rare to find in a teacher. I see him be truly present for his students both martially and emotionally. To add to his humility, he created a space for Kiku Matsu's head instructor to be empowered as well. Often that can be a challenge in spaces. Kiku Matsu's head instructor, Laura DeGraff Sensei a phenomenal soul and dedicated talent. It's still rare to find women who lead in the martial arts world, let alone with the grace and power that she holds. She holds the traditions well, yet welcomes a younger generation to be part of the school's success. It was my first time visiting Chicago, but the vibe of the area embraces the unique and a strong love to support local businesses. That being said, Kiku Matsu Dojo is what the people of Chicago are looking for.

Our 7 year old son started practicing Aikido at Kiku Matsu Dojo in January 2025, and we couldn’t be happier with our decision. We chose Aikido because of its beautiful philosophy—teaching students not to attack, but to redirect an attacker’s force in a way that protects both people. The focus on peace, inner control, and discipline really aligns with our values. Our son truly enjoys his Aikido classes and always looks forward to the days he gets to attend. With membership, students can attend any and up to three 1-hour classes per week, offering great flexibility. While your child is in class, you can either wait at the dojo or take a short walk to Welles Park, the nearby public library, or Starbucks. There's free street parking near the library, which is a big plus. Beyond the excellent classes, our son loves participating in the community events the dojo organizes—like family practice days, potlucks, and movie nights. These extras build a strong sense of belonging and fun. His Sensei, Coby, is truly exceptional with children. She is disciplined and structured in her teaching but also incredibly kind, warm, and nurturing. Our son also loves Sensei Andrew, who shows deep care for both the kids and the art of Aikido. He connects wonderfully with our son and fosters a positive, respectful learning environment. Since joining, our son has become more self-disciplined, more aware of his body and physical strength, and more focused on persistence and progress through practice. He’s now preparing for his second belt exam, and we’re excited to support him on this journey. We can’t wait for our younger child to turn six and start Aikido as well. Kiku Matsu Dojo is more than a martial arts school—it’s a community that helps children grow in both character and confidence.

When I attend practice at this dojo, I experience a sense of homecoming. DeGraff Sensei and all fellow aikidokas extend genuine hospitality and kindness, which I deeply appreciate. I hold great affection for practicing aikido under Sato Sensei's guidance, and I'm truly grateful for the opportunity. I sincerely hope that this enriching experience continues for as long as possible.
