Been coming to this gym for 4+ years, doing classes and privates. The classes are guaranteed to make you work and include rotations working at the speedbag, running on the treadmill, individual mittwork with instructors, guided heavy-bag rounds, and end with corework. Carlos, the gym’s owner, and his team of instructors (Margarita, Rudy, Hector, and Anthony) have the expertise, experience, and boxing knowledge to provide top-notch instruction to boxers of all levels. If taking privates, Carlos will individualize the instruction to meet your goals, whether it be just for fitness or to get competition ready. This gym is welcoming, clean, and provides an amazing atmosphere for training.

Facility is spacious, modern and clean. Instructors engage and teach, they don’t just babysit and leave you to your own devices. For the last month or so I’ve been doing one on one sessions with instructor and professional boxer Matt Hambric. Matt allows me to work at my own pace while pushing me to go a little more each session. Also, as a woman in a boxing gym it goes without saying that it can feel intimidating being in this environment. Matt alleviates the stress of a new place and makes it feel like I’ve always been a part of this sport. Being not naturally athletic is complicated enough but having a knowledgeable trainer like Matt makes me feel like I could train for a fight… maybe?

ACTUAL CONVO DURING MY LAST ANNUAL PHYSICAL: DOCTOR: "Wow, your Resting Heart Rate is 50 and your blood pressure is 110/65! What have you been taking?" ME: "Matt Hambric's Private Boxing Coaching. That's what I've been taking." DOCTOR: "Um, no, I mean what medicine have you been taking?" ME: "Medicine? He makes me slam medicine balls into a wall to enhance my rotational strength on both sides. Speaking of 'both sides', I used to only box orthodox, but he trained me in southpaw, too, so I can give different looks in sparring. You know, like Bud Crawford & 'em." DOCTOR: "Lol! Well, I don't know what any of that means but whatever he's having you do, keep it up, Mark." ME: "Doc, no disrespect, but I wouldn't stop going even if you told me not to. . . but it's good to know you approve." If you're reading this right now, go to Oakley Boxing Gym, walk up to the front desk, and ask for Matt Hambric. You will "not* regret it.
