I recently started my training at LKA: in under two months, I can say that it has greatly improved my mental and physical health. I have a background in dance, but no prior martial arts experience. The moment I reached out to LKA, I was welcomed with enthusiasm and respect. I missed the sense of community I had when in dance, and I have found that sense of community at LKA. Most of the people who train here have come up to me, introduced themselves, and took effort to welcome me, regardless of their rank or years of training. The rest have been pleasant when I engaged with them. Each senpai (instructor) offers a unique perspective and training style, which has helped me become well-rounded in different areas. Some may be more stern or straightforward than others, but as someone who truly wants to learn, I appreciate their attention to detail. As a former dancer, I know that healthy criticism is quite beneficial and not to be taken as a personal attack. Although I am just beginning and have a lot to learn, I feel motivated and inspired by my peers, senpai, and sensei. As someone who was unsure about starting martial arts training and felt uneasy about joining a club, I completely recommend this dojo to anyone looking for a welcoming and encouraging environment for all ages and backgrounds!

Traditional shotokan karate, instructors are very knowledgeable. I like the traditional Japanese vibe of the dojo. I have been training here for 8 years now and definitely earned my black belt. It's not a school where you pay for a rank promotion.

Trained at their old dojo on Metairie Road back in the 80s. When I went back, I was happy to find the Mikami Sensei was still teaching classes! It's a great place, homey feeling, and newcomers are welcomed and encouraged!

Great dojo and excellent instructors. I did Shotokan karate for several years in my early 20s and I'm back at it after more than 30 years have passed. I am starting over and really enjoy it. I'm definitely not as fit or flexible now but the instructors and students have been welcoming, kind, patient, and positive. They will definitely push you to do your best and to train hard. That is what you want. This is the real deal and a gem of a dojo. Highly recommended.

I enrolled in my first class taught by Sensei Mikami on September 10, 1968. Other han learning one of the best martial arts taught by the best teacher,it layed the foundation for dealung with the hardships of life and all that it presented. This is what Sensei Mikami ingrained in me...confidence, discipline, values, character and the way to overcome all odds. It doesn't get any better than this. Never give up.
