Gracie Barra is hands down the best place to start practicing Jiu Jitsu! Both Professor Mario and Ramone are exceptional at their craft and have mastered the art of teaching as well. They are not only highly skilled, but they also take the time to ensure each student improves at their own pace, regardless of skill level. The environment is incredibly welcoming, and from day one, you feel like a part of the family. Everyone, professors, coaches, and fellow students, treats you with respect and encouragement. It’s a fantastic place to train, learn, and grow, both on and off the mats. I highly recommend Gracie Barra for anyone looking to start or continue their Jiu Jitsu journey!

Gracie Barra is a great place to start training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Classes are professional, the techniques are effective, and the environment is that of people trying to better their lives. Mario is the head professor with 17+ years of experience, I’ve known him for over 5 years and I travel 40 mins one way to learn his techniques. Try a class, and I bet you won’t regret it.

Without a doubt, Gracie Barra South Portland is the best Jiu-Jitsu school in Maine! The environment is very welcoming and family-friendly, perfect for anyone who wants to learn Jiu-Jitsu in a fun yet serious way. Professor Mário is extremely technical and attentive, always explaining movements clearly and helping each student progress at their own pace. The whole team genuinely cares about the students’ growth and well-being. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to train Jiu-Jitsu in a positive, safe, and motivating environment!

I had thought of trying BJJ for a few years before I joined Gracie Barrie Sopo (going on 10 months as a member). My goal was to become more comfortable in uncomfortable situations. I also wanted to get in better shape and improve confidence in challenging environments. I've lost 20 lbs and am gaining incredible life skills, honing my discipline, improving confidence, balancing my emotions better, and connecting with a great group of very welcoming people who have become friends. This is a fantastic group who truly cares about seeing you grow and develop as a BJJ practitioner, but also in life. Professor Mario is an amazing instructor and coach, he makes things simple and listens. He encourages lots of questions and slows down and makes sure you understand the concepts behind what you're doing. This is the kind of gym that truly embodies "Jiu Jitzu for everyone." I've enjoyed a very safe, cool environment that has allowed my intimidated feelings to wither away, looking forward to seeing my friends and learning new skills. Yes, you'll be able to control situations, kick ass, if that's in your goal bucket, but you won't need to, because you'll have so much confidence and control of yourself and the other person that it will negate the need for confrontation. This has improved my management skills as a business owner, redeveloped discipline in certain areas, and has done so much in my life outside of the mats that it would be hard to explain in words. It's an incredible martial art and it has the ability to change lives. If you're looking for something, need a shift in whatever it might be, Jiu Jitzu may be what you're looking for. I would certainly highly recommend this gym and I'll see you there! BJJ is the best life coach I could ask for.
