Jen and Jay have built something truly special at Capital MMA Takoma — a culture that existed long before I walked through the door and will continue long after I’m gone. Nick, in particular, has had a tremendous impact on my growth, pushing me to sharpen my technique and raise my level every time I train. What really stands out is the community. Every round is a tough round, in the best possible way — and we have fun doing it. There’s an incredible depth and diversity of talent here: judo, BJJ, MMA, Muay Thai, boxing, wrestling, self-defense — you name it. The coaches and training partners are constantly invested in making each other better, improving the space, dropping fun team rash guards, and creating an environment that people genuinely want to be part of. If you’re looking for high-level training with a real sense of camaraderie and lasting culture, this is the place.

Fantastic facility, instructors, and students. The head instructor - Nick - is one of the very best instructors I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with. He’s an incredibly skilled and knowledgeable seasoned competition black belt with a wrestling pedigree. His curriculum teaches techniques then puts them in the context of constraint-based games - adopting the very best training methods from different lineages. He’s also one of the most professional and courteous people I’ve ever known in both personal and work domains. The owners - Jen & Jay - are accomplished seasoned black-belt competitors and instructors. They have created a very warm and inclusive family atmosphere in the gym.

Transitioning to the West Coast and I needed a place to train BJJ for the week. Instructors were friendly, knowledgeable, and a joy to learn from. The people were great and friendly too. Would 100% train here as a main gym if I were staying in the area. The facility was clean and spacious, too. Cannot recommend enough!

I started training in Brazilian jiu jitsu when I turned 50, right before the pandemic. It's been a life altering experience! Both of my kids (6 & 4) now train as well. The coaches are super supportive and knowledgeable. Everyone, coaches and training partners, have been awesome companions on this journey. I highly recommend this school, and what it offers, to anyone of any age.
