Been at this gym for about 4 years, the coaches/teachers are very knowledgeable and not only helped me learn to defend myself but also gave me the confidence to get in the ring three times! Coming to a gym you expect to learn martial arts and get in shape; to my surprise I’ve meet amazing people and made some great friends. Everyone’s friendly and easygoing. This gym is filled with students at different levels, yet everyone is happy to learn from each other. Whenever someone asks me what gym I go to when they see me train or fight I always recommend Hero MMA!!

DO NOT RECOMMEND. I honestly probably should report this incident to the State. I found them on groupon and explained to them I was a complete beginner interested for self defense purposes. They advised me on which class to take. In my first and only class, I was told to get “on all fours”(hands and knees on ground, face and chin down) and allow my partner to put me in a choke hold but immediately her grip was WAY TOO tight. The instructor was kneeling right beside us guiding her step by step, yet neither her nor the instructor were observing that I was actually choking. I was never told how to give a distress signal. I could not speak. I could not give eye contact and they could not see my face because of the position. So I had no choice but be calm and wait for it to be over. But I could hardly breathe and then something switched in my brain and I went into a full blown panic attack. It was nuts. I think being in that position that tightly triggered the hell out of me. With no training, I began struggling to get her off but it was like a death move—no way out. To make it worse when I resisted and tried to escape she starts choking me down harder… She was trying to win. I was trying to breathe and get to safety. She was trying to show she was some fierce fighter. It was a GOD AWFUL experience of total helplessness!!! I went to learn techniques to empower me and instead I got re-victimized. What is worst is the Coach was sitting on the floor guiding her step by step and watching the ENTIRE time. This is also why she held me in the choke hold for so long to begin with is because he was yammering away instructions to her. How can an instructor be inches from me, sitting on the mat, and is so oblivious to my condition!! After a while of tussling around with her (I could not get out of the position she had me in), I could tell she finally sensed I was not okay. She releases me. I clutch my throat and yell that she was actually choking me!!!! In terror and anger, I go straight to my belongings and get dress to leave. They both sat there in shock but at least the girl did follow me and profusely apologize. I appreciated that. The instructor…. He didn’t do or say anything. He just sat on the mat looking dumbfounded at it all like it had nothing to do with him. No apology. No, are you ok? Let’s take some breaths. A hug. Nope. Nada. I went to my car and just broke down sobbing in the parking lot. This was a full on highly triggering experience that sent me into a very dark place for the next few days. I was already going through a very hard time and this really made my mental plummet. This place should be shutdown or sued for negligence and incompetence and just wonton disregard. Even if this exact encounter doesn’t happen to you, know that Hero MMA was unprofessional and undisciplined from the start though as well: a kid (not that young) was running around during class, bumping into the other students. The warm up was led by a student who gave zero instruction, just called out moves. There was no stretching. They didnt teach us any safety protocols: how to tap out, give distress signals, how to gauge how much force to use. The coach didn't teach any fundamentals moves, just jumped straight to serious floor grappling. Go at your own risk. I would never recommend this place to anyone.
