Had a really good, positively challenging training as a visiting Shotokan practitioner at the Dojo. Very friendly, warm and welcoming Sensei and Students. Pretty good level of Kihon, light Kumite and especially Kata. Explanations are given in a helpful and encouraging manner. Full recommendation! Also watched the training for the younger, very supportive Senpai (Senior students helping the beginners)

Great Karate School with a long history of molding our next generation. Toryu Sensei is willing to work with me even when I can only come in during off hour such as Sunday. Highly recommend this place for any serious karate practitioner who would love to get a higher level of karate skills.

TLDR: JKA Boston is a phenomenal and wonderful school for adults, families, and children. The instruction is focused on traditional and proper technique and self-discipline, in a positive, encouraging environment. So if that's what you're looking for, this is the school for you. Sensei Toryu and all of the instructors are incredibly attentive and push you to become better everyday, while also managing to be kind and generous. Sensei Toryu is very thoughtful, caring, and patient with his instruction. It is so clear how his approach is transmitted to his instructors, who carry the legacy of their own sensei, and seniors with seriousness and respect. The beginner program is critical in developing a solid foundation for Shotokan karate of course, but also for martial arts in general. It's a demonstration of how intentional Sensei Toryu is about his approach and dojo--the beginner program helps you to join the dojo's regular classes with the vocabulary you need. If you are looking for a dojo to either start practicing or continue practicing karate, especially Shotokan, in the Boston area, I cannot recommend JKA Boston enough. It is an incredible community and being part of it and practicing karate has changed my life for the better forever. JKA Boston is a special dojo, and if I ever move back, I would practice here again in a heartbeat. Updated 11/2022 since I just wrote a new review for my dojang after moving. JKA Boston is the foundation for me practicing martial arts, and I wanted to make sure my review honored that well.
