About

JP Martial Arts Academy in Boston offers comprehensive training in MMA, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and Karate under experienced leadership. Head Instructor David Shim brings a 9th Degree Black Belt in Karate and a Black Belt in BJJ to his teaching, supported by instructors Lucy Zahner Montgomery and Josh Parker, both Black Belts. The academy provides a structured environment where practitioners of all skill levels can develop their martial arts abilities through dedicated classes in these disciplines. Members should note that while the website schedule may not always be current, contacting the gym directly via email provides updated class times and payment details, with monthly fees typically around $120 per martial art, though exceptions may apply. For kickboxing classes, participants should come prepared with hand wraps, gloves, and a water bottle, as these sessions are cardio intensive and physically demanding. New students are encouraged to join the email notification system to stay informed about any schedule changes or closures, ensuring they can plan their training effectively. The gym fosters a community where both beginners and advanced students can train together, with classes designed to accommodate varying levels of experience, particularly noted in their Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu sessions. This approach helps create a balanced training atmosphere where everyone can progress at their own pace while receiving guidance from qualified instructors. Reviews highlight that the instructors are thoughtful and create a supportive learning environment, making even those new to martial arts feel comfortable and welcomed. However, prospective members should be aware that some reviewers have raised concerns about safety instruction, with one report of an injury during a first class due to insufficient guidance on technique. Despite this, the overall feedback emphasizes the gym's commitment to respectful training and the positive impact of its coaching staff on members' martial arts journeys.

Would recommend this place for a variety of reasons: it's a relatively supportive environment; right now as of October 25, 2024, their ju-jitsu class has a reasonable level of participants, so you'll find practitioners of varying skill level. For kickboxing, it's a cardio-demanding martial art so expect to prepare yourself to be sweating. Some tips from someone who has been going for over 7 months for kickboxing: Buy hand-wraps either on Amazon or at the dojo, gloves, a water bottle and when you get in there, if you plan on sticking it out for a while, ask to be put in their email system so in the case that the dojo is closed ahead of time, you'd know. The website schedule isn't as fully up-to-date, it's better if you email them for an updated schedule. Currently it's $120 per martial art per month, but there have been some exceptions here and there, it's better if you speak with them in person/on the phone for financial payment clarification. I can talk forever with a bunch of other things but this is too long already. Have fun!

Hurt wrist, requiring 6 months of rehab in first class there. No instruction on safety or technique provided, despite instructors knowing it was my first time, just left to figure it out. Would not recommend this facility.
