Roxbury YMCA
About
The Roxbury YMCA offers mixed martial arts and kickboxing training within a comprehensive community facility. Members have access to a fully equipped gym with machines and weights, a basketball court, swimming pool, and sauna and steam room amenities. The facility provides a space where people of all ages can focus on health, fitness, and personal growth. Many members describe a strong sense of community and note that staff are often friendly and welcoming, creating a positive environment for training and connection. The regular staff, including specific individuals mentioned by members, are frequently praised for their hard work and helpfulness under challenging conditions. The gym serves as a hub for both serious fitness pursuits and casual recreation, with programming that extends beyond martial arts to include various community activities. However, reviews indicate significant operational challenges. Members report inconsistent facility maintenance, with equipment frequently broken or out of service. Management availability is a common concern, with directors often described as unresponsive or absent when members need assistance. Issues with staffing levels leave employees overworked and members without adequate support. Specific problems include unreliable opening times, difficulties with membership cancellation processes, and the frequent closure of services like Child Watch, which inconveniences parents. The environment at the front desk can sometimes feel chaotic due to disruptive staff behavior. While the physical space and community potential are acknowledged, these management and operational issues significantly impact the member experience. Members express hope for improvement through stronger, more visible leadership and better accountability from management to match the dedication shown by frontline staff.

Members praise the strong sense of community and welcoming atmosphere, with specific staff members like the manager with dreads, the Spanish guy, and the Spanish girl who opens at 6am consistently noted for their helpfulness and hard work. They appreciate the comprehensive amenities including the gym equipment, basketball court, swimming pool, and sauna. However, significant concerns focus on poor management, with directors frequently unavailable, unprofessional, or avoiding member interactions. Operational issues are prevalent, including broken equipment, unreliable opening hours, chaotic front desk environments, overworked staff, and difficult cancellation processes. Many feel the regular staff demonstrate more effort and accountability than the leadership, creating a disconnect between the facility's potential and its current execution.

I’m rating five stars so that everyone can see this but in reality it’s 1. Where do I even begin. I have been a member of this facility since back when Kathy was director and while it wasn’t great then it has gotten significantly worse over the years. Management is almost never available when members actually need help and the membership managers are nowhere to be found, staying in their offices instead of addressing legitimate concerns, which makes it feel like they are avoiding members rather than supporting them. One manager with dreads is usually helpful and steps in whenever the front desk calls him for assistance, and he is clearly picking up the slack of the other membership managers. I honestly wonder if he is the head manager because he seems to be the only one consistently helping members. I have personally watched another manager whose office is off to the side tell the front desk staff to just take our information and never follow up, which is completely unprofessional. Yesterday I was there and watched the girl with the afro doing the work of two or more people while also training a younger employee at the same time, all while managers were nowhere to be found. No employee should have to carry that much responsibility alone. A Spanish guy who comes in is also somewhat helpful with members’ needs, and the Spanish girl who opens at 6am consistently shows up and gets the job done every day, yet it seems like the hardest working employees are not the ones in leadership. The fitness floor is just as bad because you can never find help when you need assistance up there either. Overall the regular staff show more effort, accountability, and presence than management does and that is a serious problem. This facility needs stronger and more visible leadership, and at this point I would like to speak with the executive director personally about his staff and the lack of support members are experiencing.

They were closed and never opened at 6AM on Tuesday, Oct 7th. Gym is nice but people never clean up after themselves and put their equipment back where it belongs. This isn’t the first time they never opened or someone was late to open their doors.

I’m extremely disappointed with the YMCA in Roxbury. There are consistently no Spanish-speaking staff available to assist members, even though this is clearly a community where Spanish support is needed. This creates unnecessary barriers for families trying to access programs, ask questions, or receive basic assistance. On top of that, the facility itself is constantly in poor condition. Equipment is frequently broken or “out of service,” and nothing seems to get fixed in a timely manner. The lack of upkeep reflects badly on management. The Facilities Director, in particular, comes across as disrespectful and unprofessional, often displaying a very negative attitude instead of addressing the real issues in the building. Another major issue is the environment at the front desk. The after-school staff and directors are often loud and disruptive, making the space feel chaotic rather than organized or professional. Child Watch has also been closed for the majority of the time, including as recently as less than a month ago. This is extremely inconvenient for parents who depend on this service. When questions arise, directors are rarely available or visible, and the staff who are present are clearly overworked and stretched too thin. Staffing overall is a serious problem. There are rarely enough employees on shift, and when there are, they’re overwhelmed with excessive workloads. This isn’t fair to the staff or the members who expect basic support and service. It’s a shame that the regular staff represent the Roxbury YMCA far better than the actual directors do. While staff are consistently working hard under pressure and doing their best to keep things running, many directors are often seen sitting around, on extended breaks, on vacation, or simply unavailable instead of actively supporting operations, addressing facility issues, or helping members when they’re needed most. This YMCA has so much potential, but poor management, lack of accountability, and disregard for both staff and members make it a disappointing experience. Changes are seriously needed.

Be aware that YMCA Boston makes cancellation unnecessarily difficult, requiring members to submit formal cancellation requests rather than allowing straightforward self-service. The notice period was not clearly disclosed at signup, and after a recent price increase I was still required to pay through an additional month of window with little time to respond. Disappointing and not member-friendly
