Sergio Penha Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

A GEM in the heart of Chinatown. Old school, throwback gym the way Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was meant to be taught. Adult Class is instructed by Master Sergio himself and he is the only Red and White belt (IYKYK) in Nevada. Kids Class is phenomenal. Multiple coaches at every class (see picture) which keeps the student to teacher ratio low and they're led by Eduardo "Duda" Penha who is Master Sergio's son. Duda is a Black Belt and 2x All American wrestler who preaches discipline and technique combined with effort and good attitudes. Classes for adults and kids are usually free to try for a couple of weeks and there's never any pressure to join.

I’ve been training for 11 years and own 3 academies myself, Ferreira Family Fight Academy in Northern California. Stopped in with my son to try a kids class while on vacation and I have to say, they are professional, friendly and have a great family vibe. Very attentive coaches, teaching respect, listening skills, detailed techniques for the kids. It can be hard to find a good school, so I highly recommend this academy. Wow! What a great family and great experience! We stopped in to check with the professor in the morning and watched them teach and roll during the 1030 AM class. Professor Penha talked about his philosophy and his background in BJJ starting in Brazil. He is a 7th Degree Black/Coral belt. We told him we train at a small gym back in Tampa and he happily invited us back for the afternoon class. The instruction was precise and started from simple to more advanced followed by several rolls. Both my son and I rolled with higher belts that treated us firmly but fair and gave us tips along the way. This is now my gym whenever I am in town again and I recommend you visit too!

Sérgio and his team are extremely welcoming, helpful and highly skilled. As a woman weighing less than 130 lbs, I was unsure if it was a good idea to visit the academy. As soon as I spoke with the first person in the academy, I felt safe and my doubts went away. I learned a lot in the 3 training sessions I joined and met amazing people. Sérgio is incredibly nice and his passion for jiu-jitsu is contagious. He is an amazing teacher. It was a life experience I won’t forget.
