Great school, great professor, awesome vibe. Every Sat. is open mat, so you can test what you learned through the week, plus, you can use the gym facilities including sauna and free parking, professor Ray is great with kids and adults, he teaches anti bulling and self defense classes as well as competitive BJJ. Asides from that, professor Ray also teaches a lot of BJJ history and principles. Several of the regulars are high level BJJ practitioners and competitors (blue, purple, brown and black belts), with regular visits from Rolles Gracie also, cant get better than that.

Professor Ray is not just a professor — he is a mentor, a leader, and an example of what true jiu-jitsu instruction should look like. Stripes here are earned, not handed out. Technique matters. If a child doesn’t have it down correctly, Professor Ray will stop, break it down, and reteach until every student understands it properly. No rushing. No shortcuts. That level of care and integrity in teaching is rare, and we are incredibly thankful for him. The students reflect that standard. They are disciplined, talented, and hardworking — exactly the kind of teammates you want your child training alongside. There is no fooling around on the mat. Kids leave class sweating, focused, and accomplished, having worked both mentally and physically. This is real training, not babysitting. Behind the scenes, Priscilla runs the operations flawlessly. She is friendly, organized, and genuinely cares about every family that walks through the door. Every child and parent is known by name. You’re never treated like a number here — you’re treated like family. If you’re looking for a place that values discipline, technique, respect, and personal growth, Rolles Gracie Newark is it. We couldn’t imagine training anywhere else. 🥋💙

I’ve trained at a few different jiu-jitsu gyms in the area, but this academy is the one that truly stood out to me. From the moment I started here, I felt welcomed and supported. The instructors take the time to teach every technique with patience and detail, making sure you actually understand and grow, no matter your level. This place has helped me improve not only as a fighter, but as a person. I’ve learned discipline, emotional control, and confidence that carry over into everyday life. It’s more than just a gym,it feels like a school for life, where you build character, respect, and a strong mindset alongside your skills. I’m grateful to be part of this team and highly recommend it to anyone looking to learn real jiu-jitsu in a positive and motivating environment.
