Chinese Hawaiian Kenpo Academy

I've studied here for 11 years, and have probably only just scratched the surface of what this school and its instructor, Sifu Jack Shamburger has to teach. This school offers a free women's self defense course twice a week. It covers reliable ways to stay safe out there. Whether looking into martial arts, personal defense, or just for a fun workout, this is THE place you want to try even if it takes some travel. Cannot recommend enough. You will grow in so many ways.

Excellent school, my son is a student. Great summer camp, excellent Little Turtles and Little Bear classes to get your child on the path to discipline and personal growth. When your child is young (under 10) it isn’t about their physical lethality as much as their personal growth, although I’m confident both are part of the curriculum. Jack is a fantastic teacher.

Jack is the best teacher I’ve ever had and I’ve been practicing martial arts for the last 20+ years in the LES. Classes are skill and belt tailored as well as affordable. Personals for extra advancement inclusive in membership is simple the icing on the cake. Sifu Jack is an incredible teacher whom I’m lucky to have had the privilege to study under.

Awareness on protecting yourself Women's Smash Classes are EXCELLENT and they are FREE. I dropped in as suggested by a friend and I wasn't disappointed. Maybe out of shape a little as they have you warm up before class which is definitely a work out. The on hand techniques that are shown are always described in full detailed by the one and only...head of the Academy. His stories and insight never cease to amaze me but it's all for a reason. It's life and you need to be aware of how to protect yourself. I'm glad I've taken several classes and was able to share what I've learned to my female co workers with a sense that taking action and educating is the key to protection. I've enjoyed my time there although I'm not able to attend more classes currently...what I've learned will go a long way. I visited this academy on a Tuesday evening for their free self defensive class and had an amazing experience. There were three instructors and the owner who taught the one and half hour class. Thank goodness we had a small enough group that we were able to each participate several times to learn the techniques. Staff were very patient, helpful and easy on the eyes (the men :-)). There were a few students who have been there a few times and some of the instructors knew them by name. At the end of our class I was waiting for some sort of sales pitch to get us to sign up for some of their paid classes and there was none. We had a pep talk on safety precautions living in NYC and were on our merry way. I will definitely return to another self defense class and check out some of the other classes they offer.
