My son has been practicing Karate here for years now and he loves it. Great for kids who need to vent out stress and stay healthy; it comes with training inner strength for self control and self defense. It's also a great place to experience different kinds of Martial arts. Not only do they have Karate, Judo and Yoga, they do special classes for all kinds of martial arts! My son now does Judo and Karate regularly and surprisingly tried Yoga last week! Led by Ryu-Sensei, all the teachers are professional, friendly and super dedicated. Great mentors for my son.

This is an amazing place to begin your martial arts journey. Sensei Ryu is so incredibly knowledgeable in karate theory, practice, and application. He thinks about every moment, every reaction, like a true martial artist. Furthermore the fact that the Budokan also has Judo is amazing. One can become a truly well rounded martial artist with both karate and judo. The Budokan is really a brilliant idea by a brilliant man. If you want to study traditional martial arts with modern application and training methods this is the perfect place.

Positive environment! Great place for beginners and children. The vibe in the children's class is friendly, laid back, and fun. All the kids love Ryu sensei, and he is great with children. It's also a great environment for learning (and/or reinforcing) Japanese language. The class is taught in both English and Japanese, so it really is a great cultural/language immersion. Our 5 year old son loves it and his Japanese skills have vastly improved because of these karate lessons.

Japanese American Budokan is a truly remarkable martial arts dojo in NYC. I’ve been practicing karate at JAB for over a year, and it has been an amazing experience. I joined the dojo as a black belt, and since training here, my karate has improved immensely. Ryu Sensei is an exceptional karate instructor who explains techniques clearly and effectively for all levels. He is also a world-class athlete with extensive knowledge in competition training, strength and conditioning, performance, and overall health and wellness. I’ve also recently started judo and yoga at the dojo. Chris Sensei is a fantastic judo instructor who has helped me understand the fundamentals while emphasizing safe training. Motomi Sensei’s yoga classes are extremely welcoming and consistently rewarding. What truly sets JAB apart is its community. The dojo is friendly, supportive, and close-knit, with regular team activities that bring everyone together. If you’re looking for a high-quality karate dojo, judo training, yoga classes, or martial arts community in NYC, JAB is an outstanding place to train and grow. It truly feels like a second family.
