Traditional Okinawan karate training taught by Kyoshi Reymond, an instructor with 35+ years of experience. The classes are small, yet high energy workouts. All ranks are welcome- from new students thru high ranking Black Belts. Great new location for the Dojo near most subways

Small class size with plenty of personal attention and an excellent, non-stop work out that can be tailored to any level, brand-new white belt through high-ranking black belt. Plenty of classes to fit your schedule (including weekends) and a great deal for unlimited monthly classes. This is a non-competition, traditional style of karate that strives to stick to its roots, using old-school techniques to protect yourself in modern day situations. Steps away from major subway lines.

Need to get in shape? Bored by jogging and lifting weights? Try a workout that’s intellectually and spiritually interesting – and teaches you to defend yourself with time-tested techniques. The Ueshiro Downtown dojo is a small but serious karate school, led by a great teacher, Kyoshi Kevin Reymond, who’s been practicing Shorin Ryu for many decades. I started classes here when my longtime dojo (in a sister-style) uptown closed, and I quickly saw that I'd found a new martial arts home. This style is a traditional Okinawan karate (the island where karate was born), passed down from master to pupil for many generations. Shorin Ryu differs from many typical karate schools in that it’s not sparring and tournament focused. It does not consider itself a sport, but rather a lifetime discipline that anyone can practice from childhood to old age. The training is based on repetition of traditional kata, some of which date to ancient times in China. These are the forms that contain all of karate’s powerful blocks and strikes and are done while developing an understanding of the attacks for which the moves are designed. Training also involves various prearranged attacks and defenses, and working on perfecting technique of blocks and strikes. Stretching is done at the beginning of every class. There are no contracts to sign – just drop in to try a class.

The Downtown Karate Dojo is the perfect venue for anyone interested in karate as a traditional martial art: no broken noses, no tournament trophies, no outrageous fees or black spandex gi's. Just an excellent all-around training regime that develops one's body, mind and spirit for dealing with life's many challenges. Classes are small enough to offer a lot of individual attention, and the focus is on mutual support as opposed to competition. For me, taking classes here was initially about letting off steam, unplugging from the iPhone, and building up a set of practical skills. While that's still true, I keep coming back because the workouts and people are truly inspiring, and I leave each time with a sense of accomplishment.
