reviewsWhat Members Say
Members praise specific coaches like Rocky, Papa, and Jojo for being excellent, pushing clients hard, and creating a friendly, clean environment that makes them feel welcomed and encouraged. Several reviewers, especially those with boxing experience, express disappointment that trainers often provide generic cardio workouts with little technical focus unless extra fees are paid, and they note inconsistent attention during classes and sparring. Concerns include trainers being distracted, mismatched sparring partners for beginners, and the gym feeling overcrowded, though many still recommend it for solid workouts and community support.

I’ve been training here for about a month and boxing for a year overall. Great gym for a solid workout and real boxing training. Coaches Papa, Jojo, and the taller coach with tattoos are excellent, they push you hard, correct your flaws, and want you to improve. They may seem tough, but it’s because they care. Highly recommend, and you can train anytime from open to close.

If you’re coming for a cardio workout, then this is a good place. But if you have experience and decide to take a class, this isn’t the place for you. I’ve been boxing for over 15 years, and never have I seen a trainer (Glasses, Long Hair) not only not pay attention to what I was doing (as a client) but I also had to wait for him to finish his breakfast, before he could give me the extremely generic “cardio” workouts. Breakfast in which he started eating AFTER I had already checked in, and warmed up. 0 focus on technique, and treated me as if I was unconvincing him. When I asked the head trainer (Old Man) he basically told me, that if I wanted to learn technique, I would have to pay extra. I’ve been going to Mendez on and off for years, even when they had a little studio on the second floor downtown, next to their main Gym. It’s extremely disappointing, and they have lost a client with me.

Terrible place if you're not a pro/amateur fighter yet. "Trainers" dont pay you any attention and their workouts dont help you to develop any technique - DONT pay for the trainer package it is a waste of money and the exact same thing as paying for gym access. Unfortunately that's not the worst part. I told one of the trainers that I was interested in sparring to improve my ring awareness and to get more exposure, and he said that he would not throw me in the deep end given that I had no experience sparring. This was not the case. He matched me with a much more experienced fighter and paid absolutely no attention to our rounds and spent most of his time looking at the other ring. This, I think, is the most toxic trait any boxing gym could have. Sparring for new fighters is supposed to be introduced gradually - body shots only, left hand only, light touches, technical sparring etc. and managed by the trainer very very carefully. It does seem like Mendez does not really care about their more recreational/ newer clients and it really shows. Show up for a day or two and you will understand what I mean. If you are just going their for cardio, I'd suggest finding a different gym. The facilities at Mendez are not great, the gym is usually overcrowded and their prices are only slightly cheaper than other gyms in the city (Last Round, Victory, Church st). I hate to write this review because Mendez does seem to do alot for the harlem community and youth, but i'd hate for others to go down the same path I did and potentially develop a negative relationship with boxing as a result.
