Queens Jiu Jitsu
About
Queens Jiu Jitsu in Astoria offers Brazilian Jiu Jitsu programs for both gi and no-gi training, along with wrestling classes, catering to practitioners of mixed martial arts. The gym is led by Professor Quinn and a team of instructors including Lizz, Jose, and CJ, who provide structured, modern instruction that evolves with the sport. Members appreciate the realistic training environment where partners offer authentic reactions, helping each student develop their own style. The facility includes showers, bathrooms, locker rooms, and multiple pricing plans, with no strict uniform brand requirements. A dedicated women's class on Saturday mornings provides a supportive entry point for female beginners. Many reviews highlight the clean, well-maintained training space with ample room for sparring, though one critical review noted concerns about cleanliness and ventilation in the basement location. The coaching is frequently praised as world-class, with instructors who are patient, stop mid-roll to offer guidance, and focus on technique over aggressive submissions. This approach creates a positive atmosphere where even white belts feel their growth is genuinely supported. The community aspect stands out strongly, with members describing a family-like environment where training partners celebrate each other's returns, attend competitions to support teammates, and participate in social gatherings like Halloween parties. This camaraderie, combined with detailed, accessible instruction, makes the gym a welcoming place for both beginners and experienced athletes looking to advance their skills in a controlled, encouraging setting.
reviewsWhat Members Say
Members consistently praise the exceptional coaching under Professor Quinn and his team, describing it as world-class, patient, and focused on realistic technique development. The strong sense of community is a major highlight, with many noting a supportive, family-like atmosphere where higher belts help beginners and members genuinely invest in each other's growth. Specific strengths include the structured BJJ and wrestling programs, the women's Saturday class, and the modern, evolving teaching style. However, one critical review raised concerns about cleanliness, poor ventilation, a male-dominated vibe, and unprofessional behavior from the owner regarding billing issues, though these appear isolated amid overwhelmingly positive feedback.

I had to leave NYC for 9 months, and when I came back I only looked for apartments in Astoria specifically so I could come back to this gym. That's how good this gym is. The instruction is excellent and stays current - coming back I saw updates to techniques I'd learned and new details reflecting how the sport's evolved - and you can check Prof. Quinn's credentials on the website, but what it doesn't show you is the culture: Teachers are patient. Black belts will stop mid-roll to instruct white belts. No one's cranking submissions. Training partners are controlled. Everyone's genuinely kind and invested in each other's growth. There's gatherings and halloween parties. People not competing go to competitions just to support their training partners. As a mere white belt I came back after 9 months and had multiple people genuinely happy to see me back, even sporadic training partners... I could go on and on, but all in all it's just an incredible community. If you're looking for a place to grow in jiu jitsu and actually enjoy the process, this is it.

As a 2012 Freestyle Wrestling Olympian, multi-time Pan American medalist, and 5-time amateur champion in MMA promotions across the US, I have trained at some of the best facilities around the world. Throughout my travels, I have found that the coaching at Queens Jiu Jitsu, under the supervision of Professor Quinn, is truly exceptional. In addition to their Brazilian Jiu Jitsu(Gi & NoGi) program, this location also offers a comprehensive wrestling program, which is perfect for anyone looking to improve their wrestling skills. The facility itself is clean and well-maintained, with space for training and sparring. What sets this Astoria location apart from others is the sense of community and camaraderie among the students and instructors. Everyone is supportive and encouraging, which makes for a positive and motivating training environment. As someone with extensive experience in combat sports, I can confidently recommend this Queens Jiu Jitsu location to anyone looking to take their skills to the next level. Whether you're a seasoned athlete or a beginner, this facility has everything you need to succeed.

*Showers. Bathrooms. Locker rooms. Multiple price plans. No color, brand rules on GI uniform. A women only Saturday morning class. Less of the traditional, bowing, oss, professor stuff. Modern, ever evolving. Quinn, Lizz, Jose, and CJ teach a well structured jiu jitsu class that actually has a end goal with REALISTIC reactions from your partners encourages you to find your OWN style. Rolls with all the students. You have a great amount of partners who compete who will let you experience different moves you will only see at other gyms or casual jiu jitsu players who are here to have fun, de stress, and learn self defense. Coach Kevin teaches wrestling classes on Thursdays and Saturdays. Super specific and detailed lessons. Will stop to show you the move again and again.

I never thought I would find such a supportive community in pursuing martial arts and physical fitness. Queens Jiu Jitsu is my home 5 minutes from home. It’s the perfect place for a woman just starting her BJJ journey to feel supported, welcomed, safe, and have a ton of fun. Professor Quinn’s instruction style is both accessible and challenging in the best way - absolutely world-class. I have been able to confidently compete in local tournaments in just over a year of training, and I feel the coaches and higher belts are fully invested in my learning and growth as a grappler and martial artist. The general atmosphere is so down-to-earth and family-like, and I think that’s a testament to our coaches and their mindsets. Whether you’re looking for a healthy and stimulating type of exercise or hobby, or you’re looking to get out there and compete intensely, I would recommend Queens Jiu Jitsu to anyone. Women especially should check out the Saturday women’s class as it’s the best introduction to the sport I can imagine. Run (or roll), don’t walk, to QJJ if you want to get started finding your BJJ community.

I came for a class at Queens Jiu Jitsu, hoping to learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. However, my experience fell short of expectations. 🚩Cleanliness was a major concern. The mats and uniforms smelled strongly of b/o sweat and were visibly dirty with hair and what appeared to be roaches and napkins. It’s a contact sport and I did not observe respectful cleaning practices that I would see at other gyms. 🚩The gym itself is small and gets crowded. Poor ventilation in a basement. 🚩The overall vibe wasn't good. Very male dominated and unkind. 🚩Not a lot of women or instruction that allows beginners to grow in the sport. 🚩They don’t have many strong instructional practices for beginners. In conclusion, do not go here if you are new unless you like being scammed. Find a clean spot that takes care of the mats, and washes their uniforms and has quality professionals and high expectations from the sport of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. A gym that cares and makes health and safely a priority. BJJ is a great sport. Do better. ****Update _______________________________________ ⛳️Owner Quinn is disrespectful and incompetent and inappropriate. Also the WhatsApp group chat is predatory. I inquired to resolve an issue with over-billing my credit card and the owner refused to help. Instead the owner yelled loudly and caused me to feel uncomfortable. Unprofessional and not a pleasant experience. I give a google review of 0 ⭐️
