About

Ueshiro Midtown Karate Dojo offers traditional Okinawan Shorin-Ryu Karate instruction in the heart of Manhattan, maintaining the authentic art as taught through the ages in Okinawa. The dojo provides a serious, respectable, and safe environment where students learn self-defense, physical techniques, and the undiluted art of karate in its original form. Classes follow the exact same warmup sequences, basic exercises, kata, and kumite as traditional dojos in Okinawa, with instruction from highly dedicated black belts including Kyoshi Mackay, a 9th degree black belt, and the school's Shihan who are committed to teaching the art in its purest form.

I've been training here since 2012 because they offer traditional karate classes and an extremely supportive community. There's a genuine commitment to both perfecting physical techniques and developing confidence, poise, and inner calm in any kind of stressful situation. I chose this dojo because I always feel physically and mentally better after a class than I did going in, and it's a great way to stay in shape while constantly learning new things.

This is one of, if not the best Karate School in NYC. My kids grew up here. I have been training with them here for over 10 years under the watchful eyes of some of the most dedicated and high-spirited Black Belts anywhere. If you are looking to get fit, learn self-defense and the authentic and undiluted art of karate in its original form, in a serious, respectable and safe environment, this is the school for you.

A great place to leave the stresses of our everyday lives behind us and appreciate our capabilities as humans. Even in the heart of bustling midtown Manhattan this dojo takes you back to Okinawa to learn the ways and traditional skills of the Karate masters who came before us. People of all different ethnicities and cultures are welcome here. Whether you are in your 20s, 50s or 70s, you will find something to take away from every class!

This is a traditional Okinawan Shorin-Ryu Karate dojo that teaches the art in the same traditions that it's been taught through the ages. I recently had the pleasure of visiting an unaffiliated, traditional Shorin-Ryu Karate dojo in Okinawa - the birthplace of Karate. Their class was exactly the same as what you'll find at Ueshio Midtown Karate Dojo. The exact same warmup sequence, identical basic exercises, the same kata and the same kumite. If you want to learn Karate the way it was meant to be taught, you could go to Okinawa - or you could just go to Midtown. I've had the pleasure of training with Midtown's Shihan (school director), Kyoshi Mackay (9th degree black belt), on several occasions (and will have this pleasure again in less than a week). He is clearly dedicated to the art in it's purest form, and he's also clearly dedicated to the student that desires to learn. If you're looking for quality instruction and involvement in an art that will change your life, this is the place to find it. I highly recommend you drop in for a visit - and then join! Your only regret will be that you didn't do so sooner!

As a young woman I was intrigued by the martial arts, but at age 27, it seemed like a far-fetched idea to start training. Once I visited Ueshiro Midtown Karate Dojo, it became almost a sanctuary, and through the years (which are many), I developed great dexterity both physically and mentally. Learning the Katas (fighting forms which date centuries old, original from Okinawa), I have felt like an ancient warrior coming back alive; or at most where as far as imagination takes one. Within the chaos of our modern world, the dojo (Karate school) awaits for me. You should give it a try and see, it awaits for you too. You are most welcomed!
