Seido Karate has really given me way more than I thought just from joining. I feel a greater purpose in life through Karate training. Our training is not only physical, but mental and filled with this greater positive overall emotion. My practice has shown me I can achieve anything I set out for to do. OSU!

I've been training at Seido, since 2002. It's a slice of Japan in the big city. It's truly inclusive and diverse--you can see the diverse age range--with classes for all ages, ethnicity, abilities--with YAI and classes for the visually impaired. Seido truly lives out the mission of Love, Respect and Obedience. Obedience to the principles of community and love. There are at least 5 classes a day every day of the week, so it's worked for my schedule. I also love all the community engagement, with working with homeless shelters and participation in the Japan Day Parade, just to name a couple. The instructors are kind, caring, and compassionate while still challenging you and making training fun and enjoyable. 10/10 HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

I have been training since 1988, more than half of my life. I have gained my confidence and discipline through Seido Karate. We definitely emphasize not just the physical benefits, but also mental strength and focus. The Seido community is another fantastic aspect of my life.

I've trained in the Seido system for 45 years. I'm now 70 and have had the great good fortune to teach Seido in my own dojo in Culver City, California for the past 25 years after spending 20 years at Seido honbu in NYC with Kaicho Nakamura, Seido's founder. Seido's emphasis on the development of positive habits and continual learning/improvement has been my North Star throughout my life. The physical aspect of Seido develops strength, coordination and balance. The technical aspect creates competence in the fighting arts. The true value of Seido, as I see it, lies in its "old fashioned" adherence to the belief that practice is more than just a physical or technical undertaking. In an age of algorithms, Seido practice offers a mindful alternative that opens the heart to the best in all of us while developing an awareness of the shadows that can keep the heart closed off from others.

Tucked away in the heart of Manhattan, Seido Honbu Dojo is a true hidden gem. It’s not just a place to practice martial arts—it’s a sanctuary, a community, and a source of inspiration. From the moment you step inside, you feel it: warmth, welcome, and a sense of belonging. The people here are more than practitioners—they’re a close-knit family who support one another through thick and thin, no matter their personal beliefs or backgrounds. The instructors at Seido Honbu are nothing short of extraordinary. Their talent, dedication, and deep knowledge of martial arts are matched only by their ability to inspire. They teach far more than physical techniques; they guide you on a path of personal growth, helping you build strength, flexibility, and resilience. But perhaps most importantly, they cultivate humility, patience, and focus—qualities that extend far beyond the dojo and into your daily life. For me, Seido Honbu has been a place to turn when life feels overwhelming. Much like the opening of Moby Dick, where people are instinctively drawn to water during times of inner turmoil, I’ve found myself drawn to this dojo when I’ve needed grounding and clarity. It’s a space to regain balance, rediscover purpose, and focus on what truly matters. The training itself is rigorous and rewarding, but it’s the supportive atmosphere that makes this dojo so special. Despite its central location in Manhattan, Seido Honbu remains a well-kept secret—many people don’t even know it exists. But for those who do, it’s a treasure. If you’re curious, take a trial class. You’ll never look back. From the very first session, you’ll feel the energy and sense of community that set this dojo apart. It’s not just a place to train—it’s a place to grow, both physically and mentally. Whether you’re a beginner looking for a new challenge or an experienced martial artist seeking a deeper connection to your practice, Seido Honbu will exceed your expectations. You’ll leave each class stronger, more flexible, and more focused. And before you know it, you’ll find yourself coming back again and again—not out of obligation, but because it feels like home. Seido Honbu Dojo isn’t just a training center—it’s a family, a refuge, and a source of strength. Give it a try, and you’ll see why so many people call it their second home.
