About
Gracie Technics Jiu-Jitsu Academy offers comprehensive training in mixed martial arts and Brazilian jiu-jitsu with a focus on practical self-defense techniques. The gym provides a wide variety of class options including gi, no-gi, open mat sessions, and separate programs for kids and teens, making it accessible for busy families and individuals. Coaches emphasize safety as the top priority while teaching real world applicable skills rather than flashy techniques. The facility is well lit, clean, and organized, creating an optimal training environment for all skill levels. Members appreciate that while the academy isn't competition focused, coaches and teammates fully support those who wish to compete and help them become competition ready. The teaching style balances technical instruction with personal attention, with coaches like Josh and James frequently staying after class to answer questions and provide additional guidance. This approach has helped many members build genuine confidence in their ability to defend themselves in difficult situations. The academy welcomes students back warmly even after extended breaks, maintaining a consistent community atmosphere that members describe as feeling like coming home. Located in Troutdale, the gym attracts dedicated students from throughout the Portland area who value the quality instruction enough to commute significant distances. The combination of professional coaching, flexible scheduling, and family friendly programming makes this academy particularly appealing to parents looking to train alongside their children. Members consistently report transformative experiences where they not only learn effective martial arts but also become part of a supportive community that encourages individual growth at each person's own pace. The environment fosters teamwork without ego driven competition, creating what many describe as a family atmosphere rather than just a training team. This balance of practical skill development and community building has made the gym a standout choice for those seeking both self-defense capability and meaningful social connections through martial arts.

My kids and I have been training here for awhile and it’s been a great experience! The coaches focus on practical jiu jitsu and real self-defense, not fluff, which I really appreciate. There are lots of class options (gi, no-gi, open mat, separate kids and teen classes) so it’s easy to fit training into our busy schedule. The environment is great too. Safety is always #1! Everyone is very friendly and it feels like you’re part of a team, but you’re also encouraged to grow at your own pace. Super supportive group. It’s not a competition focused school but if you want to compete, the coaches and teammates will definitely get you competition ready. Highly recommend, especially for families.

My daughter has learned true self defense and she learned how to protect herself in a fight if she had to. This is the most professional gym and has the best coaches.

My wife and I took a long break from jiu jitsu during the pandemic and also had a baby. Went back for my first official class this week and they welcomed me back with open arms. Lots of new people and some familiar faces still. Glad to be back home, no other place I’d train. We live in NE Portland and drive to Troutdale to train.

I randomly started doing jiujitsu one day and I started going here, and I’ve honestly learned so much. I feel more confident now than I have ever felt. I feel like I could defend myself in a bad situation. And I feel like I’m a part of something now. This gym doesn’t feel like just a team, but a family. Everyone is so welcoming and they all want to help you be better. It’s not all ego and always having to win, it’s just everyone helping each other get better together. Coach Josh and Coach James are incredible coaches and they both take time out of their day, after class, to help anyone who has questions about anything. I would highly recommend this place to anyone who wants to learn self defence, build confidence, or just be a part of something super cool.
