About

Portland Jujitsu offers training in MMA and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with a strong focus on practical street self-defense rather than competition. The gym specializes in Small Circle Jujitsu, a system developed by Professor Wally Jay that blends classical jujitsu with elements of judo, boxing, wrestling, Escrima, and Wing Chun kung fu. This versatile approach provides techniques tailored to all ages and body types, emphasizing non-lethal pain compliance control holds, throws, takedowns, and methods for restraining opponents. The training is designed to build practical skills for real-world protection, with roots in techniques used by police departments worldwide.

Versatile street self defense tailored to all ages and body types. The first session you will learn how to roll and fall safely, plus other basic techniques to start your self defense journey for beginners. Those with other martial arts skills will learn so much to add to your tool box of usable techniques.

Sensei Stan Miller holds the torch for Professor Jay (Small Circle Jujitsu) His training style draws you in week after week. Stan's real world experience coupled with his in depth knowledge of the system makes him one best instructors I learned under. He teaches with relaxed manor but requires much from his students. He has a strong attention to detail and the fine points of techniques.

Small dojo with personalized instruction makes for a perfect learning environment. Extremely practical martial art. Friendly and casual environment. Excellent teachers that explain the principles behind techniques so you can execute with effectiveness. The focus is on street defense, not competition. They build people who know how to protect themselves with the smallest and fastest techniques necessary. It's roots are in Wally Jay's style of Jujitsu and closely resembles Japanese styles but it incorporates Wing Chun, Karate, Arnis, and pressure points to name a few. Best bet is to give it a try and see if it fits you.

I wouldn't go anywhere else, I recommend this for Parents and their children. Personalized instruction and training to keep you and loved ones protected. One of the best parts of knowledge attained from Stan Miller, is knowing that I can defend myself, also that I can aid in the defense of others around me.

Criticizing an instructor without knowing their background is absurd and when said instructor has moved on from competing to train a martial art that has such an extensive and rich history, criticizing that art is equally absurd. Small Circle jujitsu was developed by Prof. Wally Jay and is based on classical jujitsu, and incorporates judo, boxing, wrestling, Escrima and Wing Chun kung fu. So because of this, Small Circle techniques are not only applicable to jujitsu, but blends beautifully with other styles of martial arts. It's true they don't concentrate on ground techniques as does BJJ, and they're not a kickboxing or boxing school nor are they training competitive wrestling. They train a combination of non-lethal pain compliance control holds and methods of restraining and controlling opponents with throws, takedowns. There is a reason that police departments worldwide use similar techniques that are taught at Portland Jujitsu, it works Small Circle Jujitsu and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu incorporate many similar techniques, but with. different emphasis that make both Jiu-Jitsu's so effective. Sensei Miller is also an asset to the community with his self defense/self confidence classes he teaches for the blind and kids classes. In addition to these classes he is contemplating adding upcoming classes for fall prevention and balance for seniors
