About

Taekwondo - White Tiger Martial Arts operates through Portland community centers in southeast and east Portland, making martial arts training exceptionally accessible and affordable. The gym offers instruction in MMA and karate disciplines, with classes held at multiple community center locations and occasional free practice sessions in local parks. This community-based approach attracts a diverse range of participants and creates a welcoming environment for all ages and skill levels. Instructor Mr. Loeffler is consistently praised for his patience, especially with young students, while maintaining appropriate classroom discipline and instilling strong work ethic. He demonstrates remarkable teaching flexibility, explaining techniques in multiple ways to ensure each student understands, and provides clear guidance on progression requirements. The program includes free monthly testing, and belts are provided at no additional cost. Classes are structured to accommodate various commitment levels, with some students achieving green belt in one year and black belt in three years through regular practice, while others progress at their own comfortable pace. The schedule offers significant flexibility, allowing students to make up missed classes at different locations or times throughout the week. Many families participate together, with parents often joining after their children begin training, creating a multigenerational learning environment. The pricing structure has remained stable for years at $35 for ten one-hour lessons, which members describe as perfect for family budgets. Uniforms are reasonably priced, and the overall value is frequently highlighted as exceptional. For adults, the training provides an engaging alternative to traditional gym workouts, combining physical exercise with skill development in a supportive atmosphere. For children, it offers constructive activity away from screens while building discipline and confidence. The program's community integration through public facilities and parks contributes to its inclusive atmosphere and makes martial arts training accessible to a broad demographic.

My oldest daughter started taking lessons with Mr Loeffler when she was four. She's now six and we have passed our beginning class and now take the intermediate classes together. My wife and I look forward to all three of our daughters learning Taekwondo here, as the prices are unbelievable and the instruction is top notch. I've always been impressed by Mr Loeffler's patience and care for his youngest students, and that care has continued into the intermediate class. Highly recommended.

This is a great martial arts class. The instructor is extremely patient while, at the same time, maintains discipline in the classroom. The prices for the classes and uniforms are great, belts are free, and students can make up a missed class by coming into one of his other classes. There also a free practice session in local parks on Thursdays & (I think) Saturdays hosted by some of the black belt students.

These classes are held at Portland community centers in southeast and are wonderful for all ages. Our daughter started going about 7 years ago, and my wife and I were inspired and joined up a year later. Mr. Loeffler is excellent with children and treats everyone with respect. He has a very positive attitude and instills discipline and hard work while still managing to keep a smile on his face after a full day of classes. He has a true gift, and I feel lucky to have him be a part of our community. The prices are perfect for our budget at $35 for ten 1-hour lessons, and the prices haven't risen in the 7 years we've been going. The classes are also very flexible, which is great if something unexpected comes up at the last minute. If you miss a class you can make it up on any of the other days it's offered at the other southeast locations. If we can't make the Tuesday night class at Mt. Scott, we can simply show up on a different day at the Montevilla or East Portland community centers and take the class then. There's free testing once a month, and Mr. Loeffler helps everyone make the progress they are after. Some people practice a lot and go to classes multiple times a week, and those people can be a Green Belt after one year and a Black Belt after three years. Most people go at a slower pace, and it's totally up to the individual. It's a great experience for kids, and gets them away from video games for a little while. As an adult, my wife and I have found it to be the perfect exercise routine, and a lot more fun than going to the gym. I couldn't recommend it more!

Great instruction by excellent teachers. Mr. Loeffler is extremely patient and effective. He will teach the same move in different ways to help his students understand in the way that makes sense for them. He is encouraging and clear, letting students know what they must master to progress. Individual and brief assessments (for kicks in intro course) help improve form. Student instructor assisting our course was knowledgeable and dedicated. Goals are attainable for everyone with practice! Very glad to have found this wonderful program.
