Ever since I first watched the UFC I, I've dreamt of practicing BJJ. Gracie Barra River Oaks surpassed all my expectations. With instructors who are among the world champions, the legacy of Mitsuyo Maeda, Helio Gracie, Carlos Gracie Sr, and Carlos Gracie Jr shines brightly here. The experience of Professor Ulpiano Malaquias represents a competitive edge of world-class caliber, coupled with the wonderful culture of respect and excellent level of the students here. This is hands down the best place in the world to practice BJJ #GOATcoaching

Joined this gym when they opened back in 2023. Great staff and clean facilities. Beginner friendly and several high level competitor coaches.

Great gym, facilities, community, and instructors. Professor Ulpiano's knowledge is incredible, and you really get an extra layer of detail hard to find anywhere else. I'm also enjoying training with Coach Henrique who has great technique and energy. Great people here, training partners included. River Oaks has a sister gym to West Chase, which is down the street. Their schedules are slightly different, allowing for flexibility with training times/classes. Update April 2024: Yeah, still awesome. Learning a lot of new things and improving on the ones I know

Phenomenal gym that I feel lucky to have found, if only for the brief time I was visiting Houston. I dropped in with Professor Ulpiano's class twice. Everyone there was extremely gracious and receptive. Prof Ulpiano's insight and technical detail is really next level - he is an excellent teacher and a legend in the sport. The other coaches I interacted with briefly were great as well. The facility itself is big, clean, and well equipped. Looking forward to my next trip to Houston so I can go back!

I had 2 kids in classes here. They got a lot out of it initially. The kids’ lead instructor was great at keeping the 30 or so kids focused. Not only did he teach BJJ, but also discipline & respect. This instructor left mid-summer. Instruction hasn’t been the same. Classes started to be run more like kindergarten class. In my kids’ last classes, the other children were dressed in Halloween costumes. There was no instruction that day, just play. My wife & I were not made aware that it was costume day & no instruction. It was a waste of 2 hours for us. Lastly, I cancelled membership. The school wanted me to sign an exit authorizing them to charge a full month for both kids ($440) to exit. I declined to do so & had to dispute charges with my credit card company. If you’re on the fence about signing up, don’t do it. Kids classes aren’t run well & they make you pay a hefty fee to leave, even if you’re unhappy with instruction. If things are good, they wouldn’t need to charge people on the way out.
