Mushin Self-Defense has been one of the most meaningful places my family and I have ever trained. As a parent, it matters deeply to me that my daughter is learning self-discipline and self-respect, not just technique. Brian Yamasaki teaches with purpose, fairness, and consistency, creating an environment where kids are held to high standards while still feeling valued and supported. My daughter knows what’s expected of her, feels respected, and is growing not only as an athlete, but as a person. He and the other instructors strike an incredible balance between structure and encouragement, and it’s clear how much intention goes into how they lead their classes. Brian also teaches the adult classes, and even though I haven’t personally taken his yet, the integrity, leadership, and values he brings are clearly reflected throughout the entire gym culture. As adult students, my husband and I train under Brandon Kiser, and the environment he helps create is just as exceptional. Both instructors foster a space where we feel safe, respected, and able to be vulnerable while still being challenged to grow. There is a rare balance here of compassion and high standards. You are supported, but you are also held accountable, and that combination builds real confidence. One of the things I respect most about Mushin is the integrity behind progression. Advancement isn’t based solely on time or hours spent on the mat. You’re expected to truly understand and demonstrate the material before progressing, even if you’ve put in the hours. That standard matters, and it makes earning a new belt feel honest, earned, and meaningful. What truly sets Mushin apart is that while the primary focus is always on training, there are occasional moments—before class, during class, or after class—where conversations about values, character, and what it means to be a good person naturally come up. They aren’t constant or forced, and that’s what makes them impactful. When those moments happen, they carry weight and reinforce that this sport is about more than just what happens on the mat. We’ve been to competitions with this team, and the energy is exactly what you want beside you: uplifting, encouraging, strong, and demanding in the best way. They believe in their students deeply, and it shows. Over the past year, we’ve built real connections here. Mushin isn’t just a gym—it’s a community rooted in grace, strength, and integrity. We are incredibly grateful to be part of it and couldn’t recommend it more highly.

Since I joined the Mushin gym almost two years ago, it has been a very pleasant life changing experience for me. Coach Brandon Kiser and Coach Brian Yamasaki are very outstanding martial arts instructors! They do a exceptional job with showing the class how to do the techniques and explaining the reasoning behind each technique they teach. I definitely would have joined earlier in my life had I known about the gym. I recommend anyone to join this gym. It will be truly be a great experience!

Having trained here for the past few years has truly been a life changing experience. The culture the instructors have grown and maintained is unlike anywhere else. They emphasize being a kind and contributing person as equally as being a skilled practitioner.

Mushin has been a consistent source of community and confidence since I joined several years ago. I’ve been able to learn lifelong skills and make lifelong friends while participating in the lessons and culture offered at this gym. As a woman, I’m always nervous to try new gyms (and I’ve gym hopped many times) - especially those focused on martial arts. I’m happy to say, I’ve always had safe, positive, supportive, inspiring experiences at Mushin and have nothing but the utmost respect for the coaches and my fellow students. If you’re looking for something new to try or improve your self defense skills, this is the place to go.
