Utah Shotokan Karate
About
Utah Shotokan Karate offers both MMA and traditional karate training in Salt Lake City. The gym operates on a flexible monthly membership model at $55 for four classes, allowing students to choose their preferred training days without long-term contracts. This approach creates an accessible environment where families can train together, with parents and children participating in classes simultaneously. The dojo maintains multiple locations to accommodate different schedules and preferences.
Led by Sensei Amadou Niang, who holds a PhD in education, instruction combines technical martial arts expertise with pedagogical understanding. Members describe training as "legit and professional" with "world class" teachings that attract visiting athletes from other disciplines. The welcoming atmosphere extends to fellow martial artists, as demonstrated when taekwondo athletes were invited to share the training space during national championship preparations. This combination of serious training and community spirit makes the gym suitable for both recreational practitioners and competitive athletes seeking authentic martial arts development.
Students consistently praise the quality of instruction and the non-commercial approach that prioritizes learning over business pressures. The dojo's flexibility allows for consistent training across multiple years, with some members having trained for three years in Utah and additional time in California locations. This continuity speaks to the sustainable training environment that balances affordability, quality instruction, and scheduling convenience for busy families and individuals.

Great teacher, very affordable lessons ($55 per months for four classes), and flexible locations. I trained here with my son together. My son enjoys the time here with other kids. This dojo is different from other commercial karate school in which they pressure you to sign long term contract. Here you pay monthly and you can choose whichever day you want to go to class. Sensei Niang is an experienced teacher with a PhD in education. Legit and professional. Highly recommended for kids to train with parents !

An extremely knowledgeable, humble, and generous Senei. Professor Niang welcomed our taekwondo athletes into his Dojo to share his training space. It was an especially excellent experience for us when he shared his wisdom before classes ended. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. This was the real gold we gained while competing in the AAU National Championships. Pil Sung! OSS!🙏🥋
