About

Han's Martial Arts Academy offers training in MMA and karate disciplines under the guidance of Master Sang Ho Han, a 7th-degree black belt and former Korean national sparring champion. The gym recently moved to a new location in Seattle's Lake City/Northgate area, where it maintains a positive, safe, and fun environment. Master Han emphasizes health-first instruction, carefully adjusting techniques for students with past injuries to ensure injury-free training. His patient and encouraging approach helps students leave classes feeling both physically energized and mentally uplifted.

reviewsWhat Members Say

Members consistently praise Master Han's exceptional teaching skills, describing him as patient, encouraging, and genuinely caring about each student's progress. They appreciate how he adjusts instruction for individual needs and creates a family-like atmosphere where students feel respected. Several reviewers highlight the positive impact on children's discipline and confidence, with one parent noting their son earned a junior black belt at age 12. While one negative review described an incident where a six-year-old felt shamed and was called a cry baby, most members emphasize Master Han's thoughtful approach and the lifelong benefits of training at his academy.

Master Han is the best. Not only he is a great teacher, but he also treats everyone like family, with care, and with respect. Born and raised doing taekwondo in Korea, he was a multi-time Korean national sparring champion and 7th-degree black belt owner. Master Han is very patient and encouraging. As an adult with past injuries, Master Han is very mindful in adjusting the instructions based on our body, making sure we put health first and this is injury-free. He puts emphasis on a positive, safe and fun environment, every time I leave the class, I feel energized and uplifted, both physically and mentally. Master Han just recently moved to a new location in Lake City/Northgate area, and there are some amazing grand reopening promos. Honestly, if it weren't that Master is so generous and kind, I wouldn't go write this review right now - due to the grand reopening the class size are very small, it's almost like private classes with so much attention from Master Han. But no matter how small the class is, Master Han always gives us 200% of his attention, because he genuinely cares about each one of us.

I have not yet brought my step-son to this school but I think I surely will after reading the only a 1-Star review from a parent who sadly does not understand the soul of traditional martial arts. I have studied martial arts for about ten years of my life and even from the perspective of that disgruntled parent, it sounded like Master Han was doing it the right way. Then I read Master Han's thoughtful reply to her review and I was certain he was. The most important thing any child (or any adult) can get out of martial arts is discipline and respect. And discipline, like anything in life truly worth having, takes a little bit of discomfort to acquire. And the more discomfort you can endure, the faster your acquisition of discipline will progress--in martial arts or anywhere else. Robert W. Smith, a respected author on the subject, said the secret to Judo is in the falls and the bows. I never studied Judo (nor Taekwondo) but I would say that is true for every martial I've ever heard of. Americans love to say "It's not getting knocked down that matters; it's how you get back up." In good martial art instruction, that metaphor for life still applies but you can get the tactile experience of it as well from the physical performance. And I believe it's that synergy of the physical and philosophical aspects that makes people progress mentally from martial arts faster than any other endeavor besides probably the military. And that's the whole point is it? We all should want to improve our ability to control ourselves mentally against laziness, against procrastination, against impatience, and against anger to name a few. I am sorry that parent gave up on this school as the loss was certainly the child's. And I can guarantee without ever having met Master Han, that if the child stuck with it, Master Han would've become a life long role model and he'd have laughed about the times he cried in class because Master Han would have built him to into a more balanced, confident individual. Indeed, I see another comment from a parent whose child started studying with Master Han over 20 years ago. If the disgruntled parent happens to read this, I hope they give somewhere else a try at least. I've never seen sincere martial art study fail to benefit a single person. As for Master Han, perhaps we will see him soon. Although I should warn him here that my 11 year old does not yet share my philosophical outlook, so there's surely some wall-standing in his future. 🧱🧱 But I would be 100 times more proud to hear he will respectfully stand against a wall of bricks whenever he's told than if I heard he kicked through a whole stack of 'em. 🙏

This is a premire Tae Kwon Do martial arts studio. Master Sang Ho Han is a former Korean International Demonstration Team member with fantasic skills. My son earned his Jr. Black Belt at the age of 12 and it was one of the best things I ever did as a father to enrich my son's life. The lessons he (and I) learned are impactful and will be a positive influence that will stay with him for his entire life. In fact, I am now a student as well and as an adult it is one of the best workouts I can get. Much better then a personl trainer, far less expensive, and as a bonus, you learn excellent self defense skills. If you are considering martial arts for your kids or yourself, you will not be disapointed with Han's Martial Arts.

I brought my boys here to try his 2 weeks special in hopes of them gaining confidence and self esteem ,with the intent of signing up long term. Class 1 as we are leaving master Han is praising students oh you did good you did good comes to my 6 year old and tells him he did bad. He cried in the car saying he didn't want to go back. I insisted he try again because we paid. CLASS 2 he is shamed for his kicks and was called disrespectful for not saying hiya. He was then made to against the wall. End of class Master Han brings me into his office with my child who at this point is starting to tear up. He proceeds to call him a cry baby and puts the money we paid on the table and tells him "don't come back here." After we had left and got home He calls to try to apologize but at this point the damage is done. I understand that part of taekwondo is discipline but he went beyond reason to shame a 6 year old who had never done any sports instead of teaching him in a postive way like his website claims . This review is raw and truthful to what we experienced and not reflective of his other reviews .
