About

The University of Washington Intramural Activities Building (IMA) in Seattle offers a comprehensive athletic facility with disciplines including MMA and wrestling gyms. As a university facility, it provides a wide range of amenities such as a pool, sauna, large gym area, cardio machines, and multiple sports courts. The facility is noted for its extensive offerings that rival other university athletic centers, with members appreciating the variety of activities available in one location. Many reviewers specifically mention the absence of music in workout areas as a positive feature that enhances their training experience.

reviewsWhat Members Say

Members praise the facility's extensive amenities, including the pool, sauna, and variety of sports options, with particular appreciation for the absence of music in workout areas. However, significant concerns center around the universal changing rooms, where inappropriate behavior has made many users feel uncomfortable and unsafe. Operational issues frequently arise, including problems with membership card systems, lack of towel availability, and a first-come, first-served court reservation system that frustrates evening players. Staff interactions sometimes lack professionalism, and crowded conditions during peak hours are commonly mentioned as drawbacks.

Super nice university facility, I have never seen anything like this in any other Uni. A number of different kinds of sports, a pool, a big gym, cardio machines, sauna. Why 3 stars tho? I find the "first come first serve" rule with the courts very illogical. There are only 2 (or 4?) pickle ball courts, and they're quite busy in the evenings, which is basically the only time most of the people can play. You have to be very lucky to find the court vacant, and there is no possibility to book it in advance and make sure you can play that night. You must arrive and see if the court is taken with your own eyes. Oh, and yes, although the only comfortable time for people to play is in the evening, those courts are not illuminated in those hours. The gym is quite crowded, but you just have to deal with this, I guess. But huge respect for not having music there! Many-many thanks for this.

Very uncomfortable with the changing rooms. I get we need a universal option, but we should have the OPTION to choose - segregated or universal - let us choose, and not be forced to into the universal area. Other facilities are doing this, why hasn't this facility respected peoples comfort and privacy? I'm not comfortable with these spaces no matter how many times they tell us it's safe.

The facility is nice, but I've noticed the locker rooms and universal areas are being taken over by men who treat it like a men's locker room. I've seen many guys strip down to their underwear and stand around, and a couple of times I've seen them take them off to quickly change and expose themselves. This is totally not appropriate and should not be allowed. This is why women feel uncomfortable in these spaces. Signage is not working. What is UW going to do to address this? It's meant to be a safe space for everyone, but I don't feel safe here. I've stopped using this space because of it.

As a UW alum, I recently went to the IMA with my renewed membership for my Husky Card. Unfortunately, the experience was far from what I expected. When my card did not scan at the card-activated gate, I attempted a second time — just as I normally would, since everyone ahead of me had entered without any issue. I was wearing my headphones at the time, and within just a few seconds of realizing the scan had failed, I suddenly heard a staff member (who had no name displayed on his badge) loudly call out to me from the desk in a manner that felt abrupt and discourteous. Surprised, I removed my headphones and approached the counter to clarify, explaining that I had renewed my membership almost ten days ago and that my credit card payment had already been processed. This stuff realized he can not solve this stupid problem, then he called his colleague. I was repeatedly questioned as though I had not paid my fees — including suggestions that I might not have registered correctly or that the system had refunded me. I was even asked to produce my personal payment records on the spot. In reality, I had already accessed the facility since my renewal without any problems, and had also renewed my locker. Once another staff member finally confirmed my membership, the only explanation given was essentially, “oh, our system made a mistake.” There was no acknowledgment of the inconvenience, no apology for the error, and no recognition of the time that had been wasted. The combination of an unreliable system and the lack of professionalism in handling the situation left me deeply disappointed. As alumni, we return to campus facilities hoping to feel welcomed and respected. Instead, I left feeling as though my integrity had been doubted. I hope IMA can improve both its membership system and staff training so future members do not encounter the same treatment.
