reviewsWhat Members Say
Members consistently praise the expert-level instruction, with Jim Peterson specifically mentioned for his ability to help students improve both technically and personally. Many describe the gym as fantastic for families and note that instructors take time to thoroughly explain techniques in well-sized classes. However, one significant concern involves the intensity of Sunday randori sessions, where a beginner reported being thrown dangerously without proper warning or preparation, feeling the environment was not beginner-friendly. Most reviews are extremely positive, but this experience highlights that the gym's competitive approach may not suit complete novices who expect more structured foundational training.

If you already know the basics and are very competitive then you'll love it. If you're a complete beginner I wouldn't recommend them. There is no beginner only foundational class; they just throw you in with the brown and black belts. I was misinformed about what Sunday classes were actually like (hardcore randori) and was wildly out of my depth, and the instructor did not warn me off. I showed up and immediately found I was out of my depth, was getting thrown in different ways and harder than I was used to, but trying to be a good sport about it. Some psycho black belt throwing me on my *neck* with seoi otoshi was the last straw. Another black belt coming over and saying it was MY fault because I was too aggressive just pissed me off. I know the thing about white belts, I know we can use strength to make up for technique, but I feel like any civilized person would verbally warn you. I received NO such warning. No one else I ever sparred with did. This guy just chose to risk snapping my neck as what, a punishment? He was a black belt, and he should have known better. I should have told them all off but couldn't even process it all in time. The instructor didn't say a damn thing. How are you going to throw a white belt on his head when you haven't even trained the throw with him or trained proper ukemi for it? I could have gotten severely hurt, and now they're down a membership.
